Recognize the Work, Never Knew the Artist
I was just putting together a holiday card for the ole boyfriend's sister when I ran across the artist Robert Motherwell. I recognize his pieces but never knew him by name so I did a little googling. Motherwell is an American painter, printmaker and editor. He was one of the youngest of the New York School (a phrase he coined), which also included Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, and Philip Guston. Now I am not going to copy and paste the whole wikipedia entry - you can read it here. I am just going to post a few pieces of his work. Enjoy!

Loving This Hong Kong Artist
Simon Birch is a Hong Kong painter, graffiti + installation artist, DJ, restaurant owner, and I bet the list goes on and on (read: pretty cool guy). There are few things that I research the moment upon discovery but I had to see what this artist was about and see more once I caught a glimpse of his work. His color palette is subdued almost but becomes vibrant and alive because of the energy and movement in the pieces.

Fun Fact
Did you know that Lincoln Logs were invented by the son of Frank Lloyd Wright - John? Me neither! And they were dubbed Lincoln (Logs) in honor of his father's middle name (a name he dropped and substituted with Lloyd, his mother's maiden name). John based the design of Lincoln Logs on the architecture of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, that was - surprise, surprise, designed by his famous dad. Love random facts!

How Cool are these bikes?!
Cool Hunting's email came this morning and look at what they showcased - a mahogany bike! The bike is made entirely of mahogany including frame, fork, seat, seat post, handlebars/stem combination and even rims. Built by a ninth-generation shipwright - Sueshiro Sano. How in the hell is that even possible - maybe as a piece of art - but the bike is functional as well. I am beyond impressed - so sharp!

Photographer Alex Prager
Something made me want to see more when I stumbled across a couple photographs by Alex Prager - an LA-based photographer. Her work is almost retro feeling yet contemporary and I love the use of color - no surprise she was heavily influenced to pick up the camera when she saw a William Eggleston exhibit years ago. Any way, I dig her look. Thought I'd share.

Best Fish Tacos Ever
I made fish tacos last night and they were ridiculously good - right, Colin? (I expect to see a comment to this post from you!) I found the recipe on CookingLight.com and then tweaked it a bit - added avocado to the mango salsa, downsized the oil, etc.
Below is the recipe:
Fish Tacos
- 1 lb. of tilapia (cut into strips)
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1 cup beer (I used Labatt Blue Light)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- Grapeseed oil to coat a pan
Heat the oil over med/med high heat. Combine flour, beer, salt and garlic powder. Toss the tilapia strips in the mixture. Fry in pan for about 5 minutes, turning occasionally. Make sure to heat the oil where it is not boiling but sizzles when you put the fish in there. Once fish is down, place on paper towels to dry.
Mango Avocado Salsa
- 1 Avocado (cubed)
- 1 Mango (cubed)
- 1/4 Red Onion (finely diced)
- Handful of Cilantro (finely chopped)
- 1 Lime (juiced)
- Pinch of Salt
Combine all ingredients and serve on top of fish in corn tortillas. MMM... so good!!
