If I Ever Go to Copenhagen, I Know Where I'm Going...

Restaurant Radio was highlighted on Remodelista today and I couldn't help but repost it because (a) I love their aesthetic, (b) I love their vision + purpose, and (c) the food looks amazing!

The restaurant is owned by "gastronomic entrepreneur" Claus Meyer, who has a bevy of sustainable farms and restaurants in the Nordic world. Additionally, he serves as host of "New Scandinavian Cooking" - a food and travel series targeting an international audience. Meyer believes that eating more vegetables and less meat is a precondition for health and a sustainable future, and refers to this attitude as "hedonistic sustainability."

Not an innovative idea, just plain smart.

Fun Fact

Did you know that Lincoln Logs were invented by the son of Frank Lloyd Wright - John? Me neither! And they were dubbed Lincoln (Logs) in honor of his father's middle name (a name he dropped and substituted with Lloyd, his mother's maiden name). John based the design of Lincoln Logs on the architecture of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, that was - surprise, surprise, designed by his famous dad. Love random facts!

How Cool are these bikes?!

Cool Hunting's email came this morning and look at what they showcased - a mahogany bike! The bike is made entirely of mahogany including frame, fork, seat, seat post, handlebars/stem combination and even rims. Built by a ninth-generation shipwright - Sueshiro Sano. How in the hell is that even possible - maybe as a piece of art - but the bike is functional as well. I am beyond impressed - so sharp!

First day of summer so I thought I'd throw a couple really great pools up on the ole' blog. The top pool house is owned by the the director of Coach - I love, love, love it. It is in my design scrapbook - placed in years and years ago.

Lamps To Make the Fins Proud.

I had to look this lamp up after walking past Haute Living on Kidzie the other day. They were on display and I wanted to pop in to find out more (more so to take a picture) but I didn't have the time or the gusto to walk into a design space and pull out my iPhone. The lamps are designed by an interior architect (naturally) by Secto Design out of Finland. I will own a couple of these in my lifetime. Love them - the pics don't even do them justice.

A Calendar Project By Oscar Diaz.

Spanish designer Oscar Diaz has designed a calendar that uses the capillary action of ink spreading across the paper to display the date.  Each month, a bottle of colored ink spreads across a sheet of paper embossed with numbers, coloring them in as it goes.

Peacock Feathers On Your Floor.

British fashion designer Matthew Williamson's free-spirited gypsy patterns and vibrant colors dance across the Peacock Light rug. Hand-knotted in Kathmandu, the flamboyant wool and silk piece sports a pattern inspired by, as its name suggests, the exotic bird's feathers against a cream or navy ground.

A Sketch I Once Had.

So I was once on a plane home from somewhere a couple years back when I quickly got the vision of the store I will someday own.  I sketched it all out - down to what the floors will look like, how the light will shine in through the transom windows - thinking about it, I should find that sketch.  The main focal point in the space though was a huge tree sculpture - it was going to be painted in a rich gold.  Any way, this email came across today and I had to include it on my blog because this is the closest thing I have seen - definitely more natural and organic than my original thought but the concept is there.  The artificial trees can be commissioned from Nature Maker in California.

Herbal Delight

Just ran across a really cool idea... an herb garden built into your kitchen design (lined with stainless - even the drainage goes through your sink plumbing).  Jim Dase - a designer at Abruzzo Kitchens - thought of the idea for a Glencoe family who loves to cook.  They even put grow light bulbs in the can lights and decorative fixtures.  Purpose within design - or, more simply stated - design with purpose - I like that.
